Terms of Use

Effective July 8, 2026 · Rewrite beta

1. What these terms cover

These terms govern your use of the Rewrite macOS application and this website during the beta period. By downloading or using Rewrite, you agree to them. If you don't agree, don't use the app.

2. Beta software

Rewrite is pre-release software. It is provided free of charge during the beta, may contain bugs, and may change, break, or stop working without notice. Features available in the beta may change before or after the 1.0 release. When the beta ends, continued use may require a paid subscription — you will be asked first, and nothing converts or charges automatically. You accept the risks inherent in using pre-release software.

3. License

We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to install and use Rewrite on Macs you own or control, for your own use. You may not redistribute, sell, or offer Rewrite as a service, and you may not reverse-engineer it except where the law permits it regardless of this term.

4. Your AI provider account

Rewrite produces rewrites using the ChatGPT or Claude account you connect. You are responsible for that account, for the provider's fees if any, and for complying with the provider's own terms of service (OpenAI's for ChatGPT, Anthropic's for Claude). Rewrite is not affiliated with or endorsed by OpenAI, Anthropic, or Apple.

5. Acceptable use

Use Rewrite only where you have the right to read and modify the text involved, and only in compliance with applicable law. You are responsible for the text you send through your AI provider and for the text you insert into documents and messages.

6. Your content

Your text is yours. Rewrite claims no rights over anything you write or rewrite. Our handling of data is described in the Privacy Policy.

7. Anonymization is best-effort — not a guarantee

Rewrite's pseudonymization is an engineering safeguard, not a guarantee. It detects sensitive text using pattern matching and on-device machine learning, and those techniques can and sometimes will miss things — unusual formats, uncommon names, context-dependent identifiers — or fail outright due to software defects. The "What the AI sees" tab exists so you can verify the exact payload of any request yourself before relying on it.

By using Rewrite you acknowledge and accept that any text you invoke it on — including sensitive details the pseudonymizer fails to detect or mask — may be transmitted to your AI provider. Do not use Rewrite on text whose disclosure would violate a law, regulation, or agreement that binds you (for example, protected health information, cardholder data, attorney-client privileged material, classified information, or content covered by a confidentiality agreement) unless you have independently verified the payload and are permitted to send it to your AI provider.

To the maximum extent permitted by law, you release Rewrite's developers from any claim arising out of the transmission or disclosure of information to your AI provider or any third party, whether caused by software defects, detection failures, misconfiguration, misuse, or otherwise.

8. AI-generated output

Rewrites, replies, and drafts are machine-generated suggestions. They may be inaccurate, incomplete, or inappropriate for your situation, and they are not legal, medical, financial, or other professional advice. You are solely responsible for reviewing, editing, and approving any text before you send or rely on it.

9. No warranty

Rewrite is provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement, and any warranty that pseudonymization, transmission, insertion, or any other function will be accurate, complete, uninterrupted, or error-free. No advice or information obtained from us or from the app creates any warranty not expressly stated here.

10. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Rewrite's developers will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or exemplary damages, or for lost profits, data, goodwill, or business opportunities, arising from your use of (or inability to use) the app or this site — including, without limitation, damages arising from the disclosure of sensitive or confidential information to your AI provider or any third party, from inaccurate or inappropriate AI output, or from text inserted into your documents or messages. Our total cumulative liability for all claims is limited to the amount you paid for Rewrite in the twelve months before the claim arose (which, during the free beta, is zero). Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations, so parts of this section may not apply to you; in that case our liability is limited to the smallest amount permitted by law.

11. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Rewrite's developers from any claims, damages, liabilities, and reasonable expenses (including attorneys' fees) arising out of your use of the app, the text you process with it, your violation of these terms, or your violation of any law or third-party right — including any claim that text you sent to your AI provider or inserted into a message breached an obligation you owed to someone else.

12. Termination

You can stop using Rewrite at any time by deleting the app. We may suspend or end the beta, or terminate this license, at any time. Sections 6–11 and 13 survive termination.

13. Governing law & general

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, without regard to conflict-of-law rules, and any dispute will be resolved in the state or federal courts located in San Francisco County, California. If any provision of these terms is held unenforceable, the rest remain in effect. These terms are the entire agreement between you and us about Rewrite and supersede any prior discussions. Our failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver of it.

14. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms — for example, when the beta ends. We'll update the effective date above and call out material changes in the app's release notes. Continued use after a change means you accept the updated terms.
